Festivities

Our local festivities, that honour our saints: Corpus Christi and Virgin of the Health, take place in a changeable date, among May and June. The festivities start with the election and announcement of the infant, youth and elder queens and ladies. Later the traditional Carroza del Vino (Wine’s float) will parade giving place to the chupinazo (it marks the beginning of the festival) and the light-switch by our mayor and queens and ladies. The funfair is very popular among children and teenagers as well as the Infant Theatre Week, organised by parents. Also the dance floor and concerts are very popular. It is traditional to make the Carrera de Cintas (ribbons race), Bicycle Day, Paella Day, the Zarzuela, the greasy pole and the small bullfighting. The festivities end with the great parade of floats and the firework display and the parade with our patron saint, Our Virgin of Health, that finishes in its hermitage in the Balneario.

It is crucial to pin point the Festival of Moors and Christians, celebrated the last Sunday of June, as it is a close date to San Juan Bautista’s Day, our former patron saint.  It consists on the representation of the delivery of the Carta Puebla (a document which considered Archena as a town) by Saint John of Jerusalem Order, which owned these lands since the Christian reconquest (year 1462).
